THE BACKBONE OF OUR ECONOMY – AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES
My
roots are firmly planted in rural Montana and there's nothing I enjoy morethan going home to my family's place to help out every summer. It troubles me to see parts of Montana withering on the vine—we have so much potential in every corner of the state, but it takes real leadership to make sure that our economy is strong statewide.
The Attorney General has a responsibility to be engaged in economic development in natural-resource-based industries through his powerful position on the State Land Board. I pledge to be more active in this regard than previous Attorneys General. I support responsible natural resource development, and strongly oppose efforts by special interest groups to completely shut down resource development through lawsuit abuse and political pressure.
I’m a dedicated conservationist in the true sense of the word, and I know we can’t waste what we have—we need to leave clean land, water, and air for today’s generations, and for generations to come. But we can’t waste our resources by needlessly locking them away either.
Positions on Agriculture and Natural Resources:
- I support responsible development of Montana’s natural resource wealth, especially Montana’s traditional mining, logging, and agriculture industries.
- I believe the State Land Board should make pro-development decisions in situations where we’ll see an increase in high-wage jobs and minimal, if any, impact to our environment.
- I’ll work with the legislature to look for ways to limit lawsuit abuse in natural-resource development.
- I will be an advocate on behalf of the thousands of Montanans who make their living off the land, and I’ll support them in efforts to keep Montana clean and healthful, and our economy strong.
- I support fair competitive leasing practices with Montana agriculture on State lands.
- I oppose monopolies and unfair pricing in the marketing, transportation and production of Montana’s agricultural products.
- I support our public schools, students, teachers and administrators, and I believe that we can increase school funding without increasing the income or property tax burden on Montanans by responsibly developing the natural resources on our School Trust Lands.
- See my positions on Energy Development.
